Tras su etapa con el famoso grupo Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes y tras desaveniencias con el líder Harold, Teddy Bear (uno de sus apodos) comenzó en 1977 una estupenda etapa en solitario con un sonido romántico/sexy en torno al sonido filadelfia. Un accidente de coche cinco años después truncó su carrera al dejarle postrado en una silla de ruedas.
